What is WAYO?
WAYO is a Japanese fashion brand founded and based in Tokyo, Japan. WAYO was created with the vision to fuse Japanese culture with Western fashion. While geographically they may be polar opposites, and one may think that it is an unnatural marriage of two worlds, the Japanese minimalism and design blends well with that of the western fashion.
What does WAYO mean?
The name WAYO is a play on these principles of Japanese and Western harmony. "Wa" ( 和 ) in Japanese translates to "harmony" as well as "Japanese." "Yo" ( 洋 ) on the other hand means "western" and "European." Together, they make Japanese and western harmony.
The way WAYO aims to achieve this harmony is through Japanese Characters, or Kanji's. Kanji's are deeply rooted in history and tradition. These characters originated from mainland China thousands of years ago and has since been adapted and made its own by the Japanese people, although many of the words can and do remain the same from their Chinese relatives. Given its long history, many of these Kanji's have been assigned important meanings, values and virtues of the Japanese people. This is what WAYO aims to share with its consumers, through the outlet of fashion.
While there are over 50,000 Kanji's to choose from, the ones selected by WAYO, and then designed by our team of designers in Japan, were done so because they have played a major role in the lives of the founders. In one way or another, these Kanji's have helped shape our founders to be who and where they are today. This is why they want to share it, with the hope that the Kanji, and what they represent, can do the same for thousands of people across the world.
